How Does Express Entry Work?

Express Entry isn’t an immigration program like most people think it is. Instead, it is an online point-based system created by the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage immigration applications intake.

Within the Express Entry system, the applicants with the highest points receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada. There are three significant immigration programs under Express Entry—The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and The Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

The Express Entry Canada system is relatively simple and involves just two major stages. The first stage involves candidates who wish to migrate to Canada expressing their interest in obtaining a Canadian permanent resident status to the Canadian government. In the second stage, the Canadian government invites candidates with the highest scores to migrate to Canada.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how you should submit your Express Entry profile to obtain a Canadian permanent residence visa.

What Are The Benefits Of The Express Entry System?

Faster Application Time
The Express Entry Canada quickens the PR visa obtaining process—it takes six months or less. The period starts when you submit the application and ends when you receive COPR. Before the Express Entry system was introduced, the application system was paper-based, resulting in many hurdles that often delayed the processing time.

Electronic System
As the entire processing of applications happens through an electronic system, there exists no possibility for discrimination. Therefore, candidates are chosen purely based on their CRS scores.

Reduced CRS Score Requirement
Canada is always open to immigrants. Hence, the minimum CRS score required to be chosen in the Express Entry draws is often reduced by the IRCC. In the upcoming years, the minimum score is expected to go further down as Canada plans to bring more skilled immigrants to the country.

The Federal System of Immigration
The Canada Express Entry is a federal system of immigration, meaning you can directly apply for Canada permanent residence once you receive an ITA. Furthermore, after you get a Canada Express Entry visa, you will be able to settle anywhere in Canada.

How Much Does The Express Entry Cost?

You can submit your Express Entry Canada profile to be added to the pool of eligible candidates for free. Nevertheless, there do exist certain costs you should plan for before submitting your Express Entry profile. For instance, the English or French language exam by a language-testing organization approved by the Canadian government, the Educational Credential Assessment, and the translation of documents to English or French, all comes with a specific fee. Additionally, there exist government fees and other costs you will incur after receiving an ITA, such as the Canadian government fees to process permanent residence applications, fees for medical exams and police background checks, and biometrics fees. The Canadian government permanent residence fees for Express Entry range around $1,325 for a person–$825 as processing fee and $500 as permanent residence fee.

How Long Does The Express Entry Process Take?

An Express Entry profile remains valid for up to one year. However, once you receive an ITA, the Canadian government usually takes around six months to process your permanent residence application. The processing time begins when a complete permanent residence application is received, and it ends when a final decision is made regarding the application. Therefore, it is essential you provide all the right documents before the processing window opens so as to avoid any delay. In case you don’t receive an ITA within a year of creating your Express Entry profile, you can quickly re-submit your profile if you are still eligible.
