Breaking News: IRCC Extended Invitations to 5,000 Canadian Experience Class Candidates in Latest Express Entry Draw

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held a second Express Entry draw this week. Here are the results from the July 31st Express Entry draw. This recent activity highlights IRCC's commitment to welcoming skilled workers into Canada. Candidates eagerly awaited the outcomes, hoping for an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

In this second draw of the week, IRCC issued 5,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for recipients was 510. This marks a significant opportunity for many skilled workers currently residing in Canada. The lower CRS score threshold may allow more candidates to qualify for an ITA.

This draw follows a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) draw held on July 30, 2024, where IRCC issued 964 ITAs to candidates with a minimum CRS score of 686. These back-to-back draws show IRCC's efforts to balance regional and national immigration needs. Applicants under the PNP program benefit from a streamlined path to permanent residency, especially those with specific provincial ties.

Express Entry

Express Entry is the system used by Canada's immigration authorities to manage applications for three key economic programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Starting from June 2023, IRCC conducts three distinct types of Express Entry draws: General, Program-specific, and Category-based. These draws are designed to address various immigration needs and priorities, ensuring a streamlined process for selecting candidates.

General and Program-Specific Express Entry Draws

General and program-specific Express Entry draws prioritize selecting candidates based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores.

CRS scores are numerical values assigned to each candidate, used by IRCC to rank individuals based on various factors. These factors include age, education, and proficiency in one or both of Canada’s official languages. The CRS helps IRCC identify and choose the most qualified candidates for immigration.

The Express Entry process for candidates eligible for IRCC's general and/or program-specific draws involves three main steps:

  1. Verify Eligibility: Ensure you meet the criteria for at least one of the three Express Entry programs managed by IRCC. This includes assessing your qualifications and work experience to determine if you qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class.
  2. Create an Online Profile: If eligible, submit an online profile to IRCC. At this stage, you will receive your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which reflects your qualifications and suitability for immigration. Regularly check your profile to stay updated on any changes or requests from IRCC.
  3. Await Draw Results: Wait for the next Express Entry draw conducted by IRCC. During this period, IRCC will assess profiles and issue Invitations to Apply (ITAs) based on the CRS cut-off scores. Stay prepared to respond promptly if you receive an ITA, as this is a critical step in the application process.

Note: To receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), your CRS score must exceed the cut-off set for the draw. Without an ITA, you will not be able to submit an electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) to IRCC.

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

Introduced in May 2023, category-based draws offer a targeted approach for IRCC to select candidates who can meet Canada's urgent labour market and demographic needs. These draws focus on individuals with specific types of work experience and skills.

Note: IRCC conducted its first category-based draw on June 28, 2023.

For this year, IRCC has specifically targeted candidates with experience or skills in the following areas:

  1. Healthcare: Experience in various healthcare professions is sought to address the growing demand for healthcare workers in Canada. This includes roles such as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians, crucial for supporting the country's healthcare system.
  2. STEM: Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields is prioritized to fill critical roles in Canada's rapidly advancing tech and innovation sectors. STEM professionals are essential for driving technological growth and maintaining the country's competitive edge.
  3. Trades: Skills and experience in skilled trades are targeted to meet the demand for construction and industrial work. This category includes electricians, plumbers, and carpenters, who play a vital role in maintaining infrastructure and supporting various industries.
  4. Transport: Experience in the transportation industry is highlighted to address the need for skilled workers in logistics and transport. This encompasses roles such as truck drivers, logisticians, and transit operators, which are crucial for ensuring efficient movement of goods and people.
  5. Agriculture and Agri-Food: Expertise in agriculture and agri-food sectors is sought to support Canada's agricultural industry and food supply chain. This includes roles in farming, food production, and agronomy, which are essential for sustaining the country's agricultural economy.
  6. French Language: Strong proficiency in the French language is emphasized to enhance Canada's bilingual workforce. This includes candidates who can contribute to Francophone communities and support national bilingualism in various sectors.
