Poll shows more people want to immigrate to Canada than ever before

For the first time, Canada has become the second most sought-after destination for potential migrants, according to a recent poll by Gallup, a global analytics and advice firm. With a record high of 900 million people expressing their desire to immigrate permanently to another country, Canada has gained popularity among potential migrants. This article delves into the reasons why Canada has become a preferred destination and what this means for the country and its immigration process.

Canada: A Rising Star in the Immigration Scene

Since 2011, the number of people who would like to immigrate permanently to another country has risen from 12% to 16%. However, not all regions have experienced an increase in people wanting to leave their home country. The data suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic did not deter people's desire to migrate, as migration rates have resumed to pre-pandemic levels since travel restrictions have begun to ease.

Canada: A Safe Haven Amidst Political Turmoil

Canada's popularity as an immigration destination has been on the rise since 2017, after former US President Donald Trump was elected. His anti-immigration stance caused many potential immigrants to look elsewhere, leading to an increase in those who would choose Canada over any other country, from 5% in 2011 to 8% in 2021. On the other hand, the number of immigrants who would choose the United States dropped to 18% from 22%.

Canada: The Second Most Popular Destination for Immigrants

Despite being in the second spot, Canada still has a higher preference rate than other countries such as Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, which are between 3-7%.

Why Do People Want to Leave Their Home Countries?

The highest percentage of people who would like to leave their home country was in Sierra Leone, where 76% of respondents said they would consider leaving. Lebanon had the second highest percentage at 63%, with Afghanistan coming in third with 53%. The region with the highest overall increase in people who would move permanently to another country was Latin America and the Caribbean, which showed a 19% increase between 2011 and 2021.

Canada's Immigration Targets: A Driving Force Behind Its Popularity

Canada's well-publicized immigration targets, aimed at combating a chronic labour shortage caused by an aging workforce and low birth rate, are likely a factor in its popularity as a destination for newcomers. Each year, Canada releases an Immigration Levels Plan that sets targets for the number of new permanent residents the country plans to welcome. In 2022, Canada welcomed over 437,000 permanent residents, with a target of 465,000 for 2023 and a rise as high as 500,000 per year by 2025.

Canada's increasing popularity as a destination for potential migrants highlights the country's commitment to welcoming and integrating newcomers. The country's immigration targets and lesser stringent immigration process, compared to other countries, make Canada an attractive destination for those seeking a better life. With Canada's need for a larger tax base to maintain social services, the country will continue to rely on immigration to drive its growth and prosperity.
