Here Are The Top 20 Most Livable Cities In Canada For Newcomers

For many, Canada represents a place of hope, opportunity, and a fresh start. But navigating the vast landscape and choosing the perfect place to call home can be daunting, especially for newcomers. This is where the Globe and Mail's recent study on the most desirable cities for newcomers in Canada comes in handy.

This comprehensive analysis evaluated 439 cities across the country, meticulously analyzing 43 variables across 10 crucial categories: economy, housing, demographics, healthcare, safety, education, community, amenities, transportation, and climate. By weighing and averaging these scores, the study created a composite livability index, identifying the 20 most welcoming cities for newcomers.

What Defines a Livable City for Newcomers?

Economy: This category assessed the financial health of each city, examining the job market, income levels, and overall economic stability. Cities like Oak Bay, Colwood, Norwich, Middlesex Centre, and Port Coquitlam stood out with unemployment rates below 6%.

Housing: Affordability and accessibility were key factors in this category. The study considered average housing costs, property taxes, and senior housing options.

Demographics: Population growth, diversity, and cultural richness were examined to gauge the city's stability and sustainability. Cities like Port Coquitlam, Abbotsford, West Vancouver, Delta, North Vancouver, and Winnipeg displayed higher diversity than the Canadian average.

Healthcare: The Globe examined the accessibility and quality of healthcare services, including residents' access to immediate care and regular healthcare providers. Cities like Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and North Vancouver boasted over 88% coverage for regular healthcare providers.

Safety: This category analyzed crime rates and residents' overall feeling of security. Wellesley emerged as the clear winner, with a crime rate 88% lower than the national average. Cities like Pitt Meadows, North Vancouver, Saanich, and Burlington also displayed lower crime rates.

Education: Educational attainment, availability of schools, and access to higher education institutions were assessed.

Community: Social engagement opportunities, community events, volunteer initiatives, and residents' sense of belonging were evaluated. West Vancouver and Coldstream topped the charts with 74% of their residents feeling a strong sense of belonging.

Amenities: Recreational facilities, entertainment options, shopping centers, and leisure activities were considered.

Transportation: Public transit systems, accessibility, and ease of getting around were analyzed. North Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Victoria emerged as the most walkable cities, even exceeding the national average.

Climate: The study examined extreme weather conditions, including days with high humidity and extreme cold. Winnipeg and Regina had the most days with temperatures below -15 degrees Celsius.
